10 things to say when you need a confidence boost πŸš€

I make ambition easy.

Hey Reader,

I’m in the midst of a book proposal and a project launch, which means I’m on the full-throttle rollercoaster of “This is going to be amazing! and “What if this fails?!”

Just when I’m feeling confident, I’ll read or watch something by someone else that stuns me into self-questioning. Who am I to do this? Who do I think am I?!

As the rollercoaster goes down, it goes back up and so throughout this process of putting myself out there, I’ve written down reminders of how to get through it with more grace, first for myself, and for everything it requires to take up space.

Because that’s what you’re doing when you put yourself out there.

When you raise your hand, stand up, speak up, tell your story, apply for that job, say no, say yes…you take up space.

You are brave.

But for the times when it doesn’t feel that way, I hope these help. (And for when you need that extra boost, reach out.)

  1. No one is you. No one has your heart, your brain, or your voice. It is not better or worse than anyone else, it is different. You are different.
  2. This will always be the worst draft. Editing (and iteration) is where the magic is.
  3. The outcome, as much as you desire it, is not the point. The process of building – and what it teaches you – is.
  4. You’ve gone through harder things. And you survived.
  5. Don’t wait to feel confident. Act first and confidence will come.
  6. You are the main character of this movie. You might as well root for yourself.
  7. Progress > Perfection. Progress means growth and growth means you’re alive.
  8. Shine your light so others can find you. Someone is out there searching for what you can give, don’t deny them.
  9. In one year, what would you like to say about yourself during this time? Act accordingly.
  10. WWAMWD (what would a mediocre white man do?)

Which one(s) did you like the best? What do you tell yourself when you need that extra boost?

Now go get paid.

How to Navigate a Career Crossroads

An excerpt from last week’s edition of
Really Good Work Advice,

a digestible deep dive into what makes a good work-life.

In my coaching practice, I’ve noticed a recent pattern. Every client who comes to me brings a personalized problem with universal emotions. They tend to feel:

  • Overwhelmed by options and information
  • Pulled in competing directions by different values and priorities
  • A sense of stuckness that’s rapidly transforming into resentment and exhaustion (either at the situation or themselves..or both)

They seek me out at the tail-end of trying to figure it out on their own, and recognize that an outside perspective will speed up the process and slow down the suffering.

It’s true, we’re all too close to ourselves; blinders are baked into what it means to be a human. What it also means to be a human is to problem-solve, a noble pursuit, however, for most of my clients – and maybe you – here’s how it usually goes:

  • View things in the binary; it’s either this or that, which limits options
  • Can’t see clearly through the fog of fear and other insecurities, cultural conditioning, or other well-intentioned yet ultimately misserving filters
  • Unsure what to tackle first so don’t even start
  • Burnout because there’s no system in place to protect the process of making change and all the energy required to do that

There’s a reason therapists have therapists and coaches have coaches! It’s nearly impossible to do this on your own.

This newsletter is dedicated to taking apart how I unpack my client’s challenges – using career crossroads as an example – and how to explore a multitude of solutions so that success isn’t defined in one, singular way.

3 Things to Ask When You’re Struggling

video preview

Life has a way of throwing curveballs at us.

I’ve faced a lawsuit, medical crises, major debt, a divorce, and debilitating burnout.

But here’s what I’ve learned. Every obstacle carries within it the seed of an opportunity. An opportunity to see things differently, to do things differently. Because when life isn’t what you want, you have a choice on what comes next. How you want it to be. Who you want to be.

I know this because I’ve lived this.

That divorce, it led me to find the love of my life. That lawsuit, it turned into a book deal. Being broke taught me to heal my relationship with money and watching my son go through two open heart surgeries as a baby opened my own heart in ways I never thought possible.

Here’s the thing. I’m not special.

I’m just determined to not let suffering be the end of the story. Instead, it’s the beginning, the beginning of a transformation of crap into gold And you can too.

It starts with asking yourself three powerful questions:

1️⃣ What does the universe want me to learn?

2️⃣ How can I make this work for me?

3️⃣ How I can use this to connect with or serve others?

You might not have an answer right away, and that’s okay. Just keep asking. The next step is to really feel your emotions. Don’t strive for strong. Go for soft. Softening allows you to be more open to receiving life’s lessons.

Be prepared though. Progress isn’t linear. Just know that the things that destabilize you actually creates the perfect conditions for transformation. That moment when your world gets tilted, that’s when you see things from a new perspective. And you don’t have to have it all figured out to take action. In fact, the mess is where the magic happens. It’s where YOU happen.

Because you’re leaving behind who you were in the other world, the before times before shit hit the fan. You’re now stepping into – no you are creating – who you will be in this new world. If you’re scared. Good. You should be. The unknown always is. But in that fear, I want you to add in a little bit of excitement. Because life is so much richer on this side. Aliveness. Awesomeness.

I can’t wait to see you here.
