This weekend, I spoke at at the Mavenly Women Worth and Work conference (shout out to our Atlanta ambassador and Mavenly Co-Founder Tallia for organizing it!) and experienced something remarkable.
 

Lisa Fey, a 30-year veteran of Coca-Cola, gave a rousing speech on how to empower women to discuss the glass ceiling from within a corporate setting. As part of her talk she asked one woman from the audience to come up to the stage.

Looking out into the crowd, Lisa asked the room to give her a standing ovation. As everyone stood and cheered, two special things happened: the young woman began to cry, and then the audience began to cry.

When I spoke to the woman afterwards, I asked her what exactly it was about her experience that moved her to tears. It turns out, it was the simple fact of being recognized.

As women, we often feel the need to keep our heads down, do our work, and be a team player. We’re often uncomfortable singing our praises, and beyond that, are uncomfortable receiving recognition.

What I learned most is that it’s so important that we as women support each other, and even the smallest gestures of kindness can make all the difference.

I hope you find her story as inspiring as I do. And I hope after you read this, you go and tell a woman that you work with she’s doing a great job, or that her hair looks really great today.
