Shoot Your Shot: Gwendoline Christie submitted herself for an Emmy 🏆
The Emmy nominations are out, and probably to the surprise of no one, Game of Thrones racked up a record-breaking 32 nominations.
Among the chatter, we came across something that caught our attention: Gwendoline Christie, the legendary Ser Brienne of Tarth, submitted herself to the Emmys, after HBO decided to pass on her submission. (She’s not alone, Alfie Allen and Carice van Houten also self-submitted).
There are a lot of lessons we can learn here from our favorite Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
-
Don’t take yourself out of the running.
-
You might have read the statistic that women only apply for jobs when they reach 90% of the listed requirements, while men apply when they reach only 60%. If you preemptively take yourself out of the running, you’ll never have a chance in the first place.
-
-
Advocate for yourself.
-
If you think you’re a good fit for a job or a project, raise your hand and throw your hat in the ring. What’s the worst that can happen?
-
-
Be persistent.
-
You might not always get the yes you want. If we’re being honest, you may not even get it most of the time. But don’t let that stop you from asking. Sir Brienne persevered through 7 seasons of absolute crap, but she came out on the other side fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a knight, with an Emmy nom to boot.
-
So what we’re saying is be like Brienne — if you want something, go after it yourself, don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. Be your own best advocate, and eventually it will pay off.
Now go get paid.
