Dolapo Sangokoya is an on-camera personality, producer, director, and full-time cheerleader for people of color and women in media. Currently at Group Nine Media’s Brandshop and recently launched the first season of her highly anticipated pop culture talk show The Lo Down with D-Lo, streaming now on the emerging platform Firework. We are so excited for her to speak at our upcoming conference, Get Money Get Paid, happening in Brooklyn on November 2nd. We sat down with Dolapo where shared the best career advice she’s received and how her mother inspires her.

What is the best career or money advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is this: Take a meaningful look around at the people in your company/ current career path. First, look at the top, and ask yourself, “Is there is someone I aspire to be or value their advice?” Then look at the right and left of you. “Are these the people I’m looking forward to collaborating with in the future?” And then look at the bottom. “Is there someone I can mentor or excited to see grow?” If you can answer yes to at least two of these questions, then you’re where you need to be.

What’s a moment in your career that you’re really proud of?

My moment is still fresh! This fall I finally launched my first passion project, The Lo Down With D-Lo, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s daunting to follow through on an idea or dream, so being able to take that first step has been such an amazing feeling. And this is only the beginning. I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

What is one thing you hope the attendees at the conference will take away from your story?

The funny thing is I’m right there with them on this journey of financial confidence and navigating my career. So I hope to be someone who they can relate to and see their journey in my story. I’ll also have a pen and paper in hand, ready to soak all the wisdom that will be given at this exciting conference.

Who is a woman you admire (living or dead)?

Beyonce. Okay, yes. This might be everyone’s answer, so I’m going to be even more basic and say my mother. But she is far from basic. She immigrated to the US, nine months pregnant with me and has never ceased in making a better life for my brothers and me. And for that I am forever grateful.
