What is the best career or money advice you’ve ever received?

Get it in writing. Whether it has to do with your career or your bank account, get it in writing. You will save yourself huge headaches by getting everything that has to do with your career or business affairs in writing. And, if somebody refuses to put it in writing, don’t be afraid to walk away.

What’s a moment in your career that you’re really proud of?

Taking the leap to launch my marketing consulting firm, Carbon Clutch Inc. (carbonclutch.co), and sticking with it even when the water was murky. Being an independent consultant has taught me so much about financial health and has given me agency to not only ask for what I am worth, but to demand it. But, it has not been easy. People thought that I was crazy for taking a leap like this but it has forced me to show up as my full and truest self and I am so much better for it.

What is one thing you hope the attendees at the conference will take away from your story?

Never stop learning. Even when you think that you’ve got everything figured out, you don’t. That might seem really cliche, but it’s the truth. As we evolve as people, our perspectives change and it doesn’t hurt to revisit, revise and reroute. That’s the only way that you will develop as a person.

Who is a woman you admire (living or dead)?

Tiffany Dufu. For the past year and a half, Tiffany Dufu has invested in so much of my growth and has been an amazing mentor to me. She’s taught me so much about leadership, entrepreneurship and simply, being a badass Black woman. And, I had the pleasure to able to watch her raise her first $1M in funding for her start-up The Cru — talk about getting money and getting paid.
