The best thing I’ve done for my mental health

Work, worth and wellbeing.

Happy almost Friday 🎉

This week I learned a profound – and probably obvious – lesson.

Releasing expectations is the key to releasing suffering (of all kinds.) Disappointment, frustration, anger…so much of it is connected to wishing things or people were one way, rather than accepting the reality that is another way.

We create elaborate stories about how life should unfold, then suffer when reality has the audacity to write its own script.

The gap between expectation and reality becomes a breeding ground for every negative emotion we know. But here’s what I realized: the gap isn’t the problem – our insistence on bridging it is.

Four Steps to Release Expectations

If you’re ready to experiment with this idea, here’s how to start:

  1. Catch the “Should” Thoughts. Notice when you think “this should be different” or “they should act differently.” These thoughts are red flags that you’re clinging to an expectation that reality isn’t meeting.
  2. Name It Out Loud. Say to yourself: “I’m having an expectation about [situation].” Simply naming it creates distance between you and the expectation, making it easier to release.
  3. Ask the Reframe Question When you feel frustration building, ask: “What if I looked at this differently?” Can you see the humanity in someone’s behavior instead of just their impact on your plans? Can you find the humor in how absurdly things are unfolding? This isn’t about being passive – it’s about finding a new angle that dissolves your resistance.
  4. Practice the Pivot. Instead of “this isn’t going as planned,” try “this is going differently than planned – what’s possible now?” This shifts you from victim of circumstances to participant in what’s actually happening.

The paradox is beautiful: when we stop demanding that life meet our expectations, we often find something better than what we originally wanted. Or at the very least, we stop suffering about what we got.

Try it this week. Pick one small expectation you’re holding and practice letting it go.

Notice what happens – not just to the situation, but to your internal state. Sometimes the most obvious lessons are the ones we need to learn again and again. Frustrating? Yes. Fine? Also, yes.

How To

Think about 💸 like a leader

As ambitious women, we juggle everything! Our work, family, creative goals, side hustles. We deserve money systems that work for us, not systems we have to babysit.

Here is my framework to think about your finances like a true leader:

I. Automate. Automation isn’t lazy, it’s smart. It removes willpower from the equation and frees you to focus on what matters.

  • Make your money moves effortless
  • Automatic bill pay
  • Scheduled savings deposits
  • Automated investments (401k, Roth IRA, robo-advisors)
  • Expense tracking tools that work in the background

II. Delegate. You don’t have to do it all yourself. Delegating is leadership. It says: I value my time, and I trust others to support me.

  • Hire a bookkeeper or CPA if you run a business
  • Use a financial coach (HEY, that’s me!)
  • Share financial responsibilities with partners, family, or teammates
  • Leverage apps and professional services

III. Elevate. Your systems shouldn’t stay static. You’re not just managing your money. You’re leading it toward the life you want.

  • Review your goals quarterly (WE can do this together!)
  • Check in on progress (credit score, net worth, debt payoff)
  • Uplevel your strategy as your income grows
  • Plan for “Future You” with bigger goals in mind

If you’ve been feeling like money management is just another chore on your endless to-do list, I SEE YOU! It doesn’t have to be that way.
