Ladies Go to Congress: Congratulations, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez!

I cried when I heard the news.

I’m proud to call Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a friend and a former classmate of mine, where we served as student ambassadors at the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground at Boston University.

She’s also a member of Ladies Get Paid, where she announced at one of our town halls last year, that she wanted to run for office. Her problem, as she says in her incredible ad spot, “Women like me aren’t supposed to run for office.” Just this past November, she was working as a bartender in Manhattan.

Not only did she run, but she won, beating a 19 year (male) Congressional veteran and the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Alexandria will now most likely become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Now you know why I cried.
