“What happens if I don’t know how to answer a question? What should I do?”

By Claire Wasserman

My best piece of advice is to take a beat. Breathe. There is no need for you to respond quickly to any of their questions. If you’re really not sure how to answer it, see if you can get more information, such as asking them to clarify. You can also say, “I want to put some more thought into this. I want to make sure I’m answering in the most thoughtful way that I can. Can I get back to you? Can I send you an email afterward?”

The quickest way to let go of your nerves is by breathing. One of my favorite exercises is called 4-7-8. Do this and you will instantly feel calmer.

I promise.

  • Breathe out any oxygen in your lungs
  • Breathe in for four
  • Hold it for seven
  • Breathe out for eight
  • Repeat three times

Remember that this is a relationship that has to work for you too. You are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. Keep in mind that even getting the chance to interview means they want this to work. They’re rooting for you! They’re hoping you’re the one 🙂
