Why do we behave in ways that we know hurt us, especially with money?
I was determined to answer this question in my latest session with Brittany Tam, who specializes in helping entrepreneurs improve their relationship with money.
For years, I’ve had an aversion to checking my bank account. The mere thought of opening my bank statement sends shivers down my spine.
That’s because it’s not just about the numbers.
It’s about what the numbers represent. For me, it’s being “bad” at math, “irresponsible” with spending, and other self-flagellating narratives my inner critic loves to lob at me.
This episode is the third in a series where I work with Brittany to address the money issues that have come up as I overhaul my business model. (Check out the first two sessions here and here.)
I share how growing up less wealthy compared to my peers made me develop a chip on my shoulder and while it’s been a motivator to be successful, it may also be blocking me from making more money.
I also tell a slightly embarrassing (okay, really embarrassing 🤦🏻♀️) story around minute 27 that leads to an aha moment about how sneaky these subconscious money blockers can be and why letting go of them can be so difficult.
Since this episode is a bit vulnerable, I’d love to hear what you think. Did it resonate? What are your sneaky money blockers? If you’re feeling brave, post your thoughts on LinkedIn and tag me – I’ll comment back 🙂

✅ Action steps:
For anyone who wants to do the work alongside me, here are notes and action steps from Brittany:
Setting yourself up for an easier ride
We spent some time thinking about how to make things feel safer when working with money.
- What would make you feel safer as you work with money?
- What makes you feel inspired?
- How can you connect your money tasks with the vision and/or values that inspire you?
Comfort zones
We talked a little bit about the fear of failure and also the fear of success. We also talked about how people can settle in comfort zones when it comes to money… even when the balance also feels stressful.
- Have you noticed if there is a balance in your bank account that you can’t break through?
Consider meditating or journaling with:
- What does having money mean to you?
- What does not having money mean to you?
